Hace un par de semanas se tuvo una reunión de alcaldes en la ciudad de México, para muchos pasó desapercibido este acontecimiento, para otros fue oportunidad de sacarse la foto y para los más otra esperanza adicional para que los cambios que muy lentamente se están dando en las ciudades del mundo desarrollado puedan también darse en las ciudades del mundo en desarrollo y con más hincapié en CDMX. Esta es la sexta vez que se reúnen los alcaldes del mundo y ahora le tocó ser a CDMX el anfitrión, los 5 eventos previos además de este han sido coordinados por las Naciones Unidas como respuesta a la premisa de que para el 2030 más de la mitad de la población del mundo vivirá en ciudades y por eso es importante conocer las mejores prácticas ambientales que están teniendo diversas ciudades del mundo para darle a sus habitantes una calidad de vida mejor. El grupo “C40” agrupa actualmente a 70 de las ciudades más importantes del mundo en las cuales habitan alrededor de 600 millones de personas y representan un cuarto del PIB global, así que no estamos hablando de una reunión de mínima importancia, sino de un evento que cambiará la forma en que se desarrolla la CDMX

A team of international scientists, led by the University of Bristol, has uncovered the earliest direct evidence of humans processing plants for food found anywhere in the world.

Researchers at the Organic Geochemistry Unit in the University of Bristol's School of Chemistry, working with colleagues at Sapienza, University of Rome and the Universities of Modena and Milan, studied unglazed pottery dating from more than 10,000 years ago, from two sites in the Libyan Sahara.

Lowly sawdust, the sawmill waste that’s sometimes tossed onto home garage floors to soak up oil spilled by amateur mechanics, could receive some new-found respect thanks to science. Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have chemically modified sawdust to make it exceptionally oil-attracting and buoyant, characteristics that are ideal for cleaning oil spills in the icy, turbulent waters of the Arctic. The nontoxic material absorbs up to five times its weight in oil and stays afloat for at least four months.

Scientists from the University of Southampton have found Arctic lakes, covered with ice during the winter months, are melting earlier each spring.

The team, who monitored 13,300 lakes using satellite imagery, have shown that on average ice is breaking up one day earlier per year, based on a 14-year period between 2000 and 2013. Their findings are published in the Nature journal 'Scientific Reports'.

More than 40 per cent of Pakistanis living in urban areas are exposed to mercury contamination through dust particles and bioaccumulation, says a new study.  

The study, published last month (November) in Science of the Total Environment, amassed hair samples from 22 sites in five zones in Pakistan — Swat Valley & Gilgit-Baltistan regions, Kashmir Valley, Lower Himalaya Mountains and Indus Plains.

Around the world, wide swaths of open ocean are nearly depleted of oxygen. Not quite dead zones, they are “oxygen minimum zones,” where a confluence of natural processes has led to extremely low concentrations of oxygen.

Only the hardiest of organisms can survive in such severe conditions, and now MIT oceanographers have found that these tough little life-forms — mostly bacteria — have a surprisingly low limit to the amount of oxygen they need to breathe.
