Most of the peninsula is sparsely inhabited desert but Baja California is also home to a beach resort, Los Cabos, that is popular with U.S. visitors.

Hurricane Henriette slammed into Los Cabos earlier this month, killing a foreign tourist. Two fishermen also died.

Hurricane Ivo followed Henriette later in September but made landfall as a tropical storm in a sparsely populated area of Baja California.

The center also said on Sunday that Tropical Storm Melissa had weakened to a tropical depression in the eastern Atlantic Ocean far from land as its winds decreased to 30 mph (45 kph).
